  • 5:00-6:00 AM: Transfer to domestic terminal at Tribhuvan Airport
  • 6:30-9:00 AM: Flight to Lukla (30-40 minutes)

  • Highlights: Your first views of the Himalayas, traditional Sherpa villages, suspension bridges
  • Villages passed: Chheplung, Ghat, Phakding

What to Expect

This is an easy first day designed to help you adjust to trekking with your pack. The trail gradually descends from Lukla, so save your energy – you’ll be climbing tomorrow! You’ll pass through pine forests, cross several suspension bridges, and see your first mani stones (carved Buddhist prayer stones).

Accommodation: Teahouse in Phakding (basic but comfortable)

Pro Tip: The adrenaline from the Lukla flight can make you rush. Take it slow – you have 11 more days ahead!

DAY 2: Phakding to Namche Bazaar

Distance: 11 km (7 miles) | Duration: 5-6 hours | Altitude gain: 830m (2,723 ft) | Ending altitude: 3,440m (11,286 ft)

The Journey

  • First half: Gentle walk through villages of Tok Tok, Benkar, Monjo
  • Monjo: Enter Sagarmatha National Park (show permits here)
  • Hillary Suspension Bridge: Cross the famous 120-meter high bridge over Dudh Koshi River
  • Final ascent: Steep 2-hour climb (600m gain) through pine forest to Namche

First Everest View!

If you’re lucky with clear weather, you’ll get your first glimpse of Mount Everest from a viewpoint about 45 minutes before Namche. This moment gives you the energy boost you need for the final steep climb!

Namche Bazaar – Gateway to Everest

Namche is the largest town in the Khumbu region – a vibrant, horseshoe-shaped settlement carved into the mountainside. It has:

  • Bakeries, restaurants, and cafes
  • Gear shops (rent or buy missing equipment)
  • ATMs (last reliable ATMs on the trail!)
  • Internet cafes
  • Saturday market (if you’re lucky to be there)
  • Sherpa Museum

Pro Tip: Withdraw cash from the ATM today! It’s the last reliable one until you return. Bring enough for the rest of your trek plus emergencies.

DAY 3: Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar

Altitude: Sleep at 3,440m (11,286 ft) | Day hike altitude: 3,880m (12,730 ft)

Panoramic mountain view from viewpoint

Why an Acclimatization Day?

“Climb high, sleep low” is the golden rule of altitude acclimatization. Today you’ll hike to higher altitude, then return to Namche to sleep. This helps your body adjust to thin air and prevents altitude sickness.

Option 1: Hotel Everest View Hike (Recommended)

  • Duration: 4-5 hours round trip
  • Altitude: 3,880m (12,730 ft)
  • Highlights: World’s highest altitude hotel, stunning Everest views, Tengboche Monastery view
  • Mountains visible: Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku
  • Coffee break: Have coffee at Hotel Everest View (expensive but worth it for the views!)
  • Village: Pass through Khumjung village, visit Hillary School

Option 2: Khunde Village Hike

  • Duration: 3-4 hours round trip
  • Altitude: 3,840m (12,598 ft)
  • Highlights: Traditional Sherpa village, Khunde Hospital (founded by Edmund Hillary), less touristy

Alternative Activities

  • Visit Sherpa Culture Museum (learn about Sherpa history and Everest expeditions)
  • Explore Namche’s Saturday market (if it’s Saturday!)
  • Rest and catch up on sleep if feeling tired
  • Organize gear, repack your backpack

Pro Tip: Don’t skip the acclimatization hike even if you feel great! It’s crucial for your success reaching EBC.

DAY 4: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche

Distance: 10 km (6 miles) | Duration: 5-6 hours | Altitude: 3,860m (12,664 ft)

The Trail

  • First half: Gradual climb out of Namche with spectacular views
  • Mid-point: Descend to Dudh Koshi River at Phunki Tenga (tea break!)
  • Second half: Steep 1.5-hour climb through rhododendron forest to Tengboche

Tengboche Monastery – Spiritual Heart of Khumbu

Tengboche is home to the region’s most important Buddhist monastery. This is a spiritual highlight of the trek.

  • Monastery visit: Attend evening prayer ceremony (around 3 PM)
  • Views: Incredible panorama of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam (the “Matterhorn of the Himalayas”)
  • Sunset: Don’t miss sunset over Ama Dablam – magical!
  • Wildlife: Watch for Himalayan tahrs (mountain goats) and colorful pheasants

Accommodation: Teahouses with incredible mountain views

Pro Tip: Tengboche gets very cold at night. Layer up and stay in the communal dining room where they have a fire.

DAY 5: Tengboche to Dingboche

Distance: 9 km (5.6 miles) | Duration: 5-6 hours | Altitude: 4,410m (14,468 ft)

Entering the High Altitude Zone

Today you cross the 4,000-meter threshold. You’ll notice the air getting thinner – walk slowly and breathe deeply.

  • Trail: Descend through birch and rhododendron forest
  • Deboche: Small village with nunnery
  • Pangboche: Highest permanent settlement with gompa (monastery)
  • Landscape change: Trees become sparse, landscape more alpine and barren
  • Rivers: Cross several streams from Ama Dablam glacier

Dingboche – Summer Yak Pasture Village

Dingboche is a picturesque village surrounded by stone walls (built to protect potato and barley fields from yaks and wind). The landscape opens up with stunning 360-degree mountain views.

  • Views: Lhotse (4th highest mountain), Island Peak, Makalu (5th highest), Ama Dablam
  • Village: Several good bakeries (cinnamon rolls at altitude!)
  • Facilities: Last place for decent Wi-Fi before Gorak Shep

Pro Tip: Start noticing your body’s response to altitude. Mild headache is normal – severe headache, nausea, or dizziness needs attention.

DAY 6: Acclimatization Day in Dingboche

Altitude: Sleep at 4,410m (14,468 ft) | Day hike: 5,100m+ (16,732+ ft)

Critical Acclimatization Day

This is your most important acclimatization day. You’re now above 14,000 feet, and your body needs time to adjust before going higher.

  • Duration: 3-4 hours round trip
  • Difficulty: Moderate, gentler than Nangkartshang
  • Views: Close-up of Island Peak and Lhotse south face
  • Village: Small settlement used as base camp for Island Peak climbing

Rest Day Activities

  • Wash clothes (if there’s sunshine)
  • Read, journal, rest
  • Play cards with other trekkers
  • Visit local bakeries
  • Organize gear for higher elevations

Pro Tip: Drink 3-4 liters of water today. Hydration is key to preventing altitude sickness.

Today is tough. The altitude makes every step harder, and the landscape becomes increasingly barren and rocky.

  • Dughla: Small tea stop at bottom of terminal moraine
  • Steep climb: Ascend terminal moraine of Khumbu Glacier (hardest part of the day)
  • Memorials: Pass memorial stones and chortens for climbers who died on Everest (sobering moment)
  • Khumbu Glacier: Walk alongside this massive glacier
  • Landscape: Rocky, barren terrain – you’re now in the “death zone” approach

Lobuche – High Altitude Settlement

Lobuche is a basic settlement of stone teahouses. It’s cold, windy, and facilities are minimal – but you’re close to your goal!

  • Accommodation: Very basic teahouses
  • Temperature: Expect freezing temperatures at night
  • Sleeping: Can be difficult due to altitude – normal!
  • Bathrooms: Mostly outside pit toilets

Pro Tip: Sleep with your water bottles to prevent freezing. Wear all your warm layers to bed!

  • Distance: 3 km each way
  • Terrain: Rocky, glacier moraine, can be icy
  • Duration: Slow pace due to altitude
  • Navigation: Follow prayer flags and stone cairns

Arriving at Everest Base Camp

You did it! You’re standing at the base of the world’s highest mountain at 5,364 meters (17,598 feet).

  • The view: Khumbu Icefall, surrounding peaks, prayer flags

  • Time at EBC: 30-60 minutes before heading back

Emotions: Pride, exhaustion, joy, disbelief – it’s normal to feel overwhelmed!

Return to Gorak Shep

  • Views: Unobstructed view of Everest summit, Nuptse, Changtse, Lhotse, Pumori
  • Photo opportunity: Best Everest photos of your trek
  • Temperature: -10 to -20°C (14 to -4°F) – freezing cold!
  • Duration: 30-45 minutes at summit

Descent to Pheriche

After Kala Patthar, descend all the way to Pheriche (or Pangboche). It’s a long day but descending helps you recover from the altitude.

  • Return to Gorak Shep for breakfast
  • Pack up and begin long descent
  • Pass through Lobuche, Dughla
  • Arrive Pheriche by late afternoon
  • Feeling better: You’ll notice breathing becomes easier as you descend

Pro Tip: Bring extra batteries for cameras – they drain quickly in extreme cold!

DAY 10: Pheriche to Namche Bazaar

Distance: 20 km | Duration: 6-7 hours | Altitude: 3,440m (11,286 ft)

Long Descent Day

Today is mostly downhill, retracing your steps through familiar villages.

  • Route: Pheriche → Pangboche → Tengboche → Namche Bazaar
  • Tengboche: Optional monastery visit if you missed it earlier
  • Energy return: You’ll have much more energy at lower altitude
  • Knee strain: Lots of downhill – hard on knees (use trekking poles!)

  • Familiar trail: Recognize landmarks from Day 1
  • Reflection: Time to reflect on your achievement

Celebration in Lukla

  • Tips: Give tips to your guide and porter (see Part 3 for tipping guide)

  • Beer: Finally at an altitude where alcohol is okay!
  • Early bed: Early flight tomorrow morning

DAY 12: Fly Lukla to Kathmandu

Return to Civilization

  • Morning: Early wake-up for flight
  • Flight: Last views of the Himalayas from the plane
  • Kathmandu arrival: Transfer to hotel
  • Rest day: Hot shower, soft bed, city food!

Weather Delays

Important: Lukla flights are frequently delayed by weather. This is why you need buffer days in your schedule!

  • Delays of 1-3 days are common during monsoon
  • Stay patient – safety comes first
  • Extra costs for food/lodging while waiting
  • Helicopter option if desperate (expensive: $500+ per person)

Alternative Itineraries

Shorter 10-Day Itinerary

Skip one acclimatization day (only recommended if you’re very fit and have trekked at altitude before).

Longer 14-Day Itinerary (Recommended for Better Acclimatization)

Add extra acclimatization days at Namche and Dingboche, or take an extra day for the EBC/Kala Patthar days.

Gokyo Lakes Extension (17-18 days)

Add Gokyo Lakes and Cho La Pass for a more adventurous loop trek.
